Bindweed re-growth
« on: July 23, 2012, 13:45 »
Hi

I was wondering when does bindweed start sending food back to its roots. I was weeding once a week but, not now had a chance to do it for just over 2 weeks. Would all the previous weeding been in vain?

Thankyou for your time and effort  ;)

I have just bought some of that myself - especially for the evil bindweed    :D

Just keep beating it up whenever you see it eventually it gets weaker.
I am hoping one day it will all go, but sadly as I had a few years where due to work/life the garden was neglected I have plenty of roots, but there is definitely less of it this year, so I may be winning!
I actually find filling a trug with it quite rewarding now, and crawl around the garden rottling out bits of it.
But I would never by the local councils compost as I know where all my bindweed went!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

Put in a cane, it climbs up and then zap it.

By all mean's put it up a cane , but then mix your weedkiller and place in a jam jar. Put the jam jar next to the cane and slide the bindweed off the cane and into the jam jar. Put something over the jar to keep out rain etc and leave it. This is a failsafe method of ensuring that all the root's are also killed.

Fantastic idea will give that a go. How long would you recommend to leave it there for?

Thankyou

2 week's, as long as you stop the rain getting in the jar and diluting it.

Glyphosphate is the only way to deal with bindweed. Much as I hate to use it, the bindweed that dares to show up gets a good zap.  But you must always keep a watch for it as it throws windblown seeds everywhere.

Glycophospate and pull any bits that you see, I am finally getting on top of my invasion, even if my OH and the dogs think I am mad for crawling around the garden rottling out bits of bindweed or painting it with weedkiller
I find it relaxing now! (plus it is something that is actually growing!!)

I cut the bottom off a 2L pop bottle and place over the new growth, spraying glyphosate through the nozzle to ensure it doesn't drift over other plants.
