raspberry suckers
« on: June 19, 2012, 22:19 »
I just read in one of my books that i can propergate the suckers, i hadnt realised and now they are a good 2-3ft high, is it to late to remove them?
its my first fruiting year with them and they have lots of raspberrys coming i hope it doesnt effect there fruiting. they are an autumn variety.

any help would be great.

leave them where they are to fruit this year. In winter dig some of the suckers up and replant them, then cut them down to the soil.
Prune all the old ones the same and new shoots will grow from the roots to fruit next year.

If they are an Autumn variety the new growth is where the fruit comes from

well i bought ready to go canes so they were already getting ready to fruit, the suckers dont look big enough to fruit but maybe they will have a grown spurt before autumn. the raspberrys on them now are big and turned so i guess they are early too :) just done my fruit cage to save them from the birds. lol
