Raspberry suckers
« on: June 06, 2012, 08:04 »
My raspberry bush is throwing out a lot of suckers... do I need to take these out? Are they a bit like side shoots of tomatoes and will detract from the fruit making on the main bush?

They will be new canes for the following years.  If they are in the way you could dig them up - they will replant if big enough, but I'm not sure whether now is the right time to try.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If these are summer fruiting raspberries, these are what you'll get next year's fruit on. Take them all out - you'll have none.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If they are in the row leave them. If they are out of the row dig them out and either discard them or replant to make new plants. Autumn raspberries especially will put up suckers several feet away and can become a weed.

Last yeart I planted around 9 Autumn Raspberry plants, 3 in each row in a 8ft square raised bed.

All of a sudden this year small plants started appearing around the edges of the raised bed. They also appeared outside the raised bed. These I have removed.

Are these new plants what you refer to as suckers and how could I tell what plants will become weeds.

These are suckers  :)

and they are weeds as they are in the wrong place

Any in the right place ie within the bed, are not weeds but new plants growing  :D

Make sure you dig up any suckers appearing outside the raspberry bed rather than just hoe them off otherwise you will subsequently discover more suckers even further away (they don't give up easily!)

Guess how I found that out!  ::)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

These suckers are great if you need a second bed or in my case if you accidentally destroyed the first bed!!!! :)
