Hot Cross Buns
« on: February 01, 2012, 17:47 »
Wanted:

Someone's personal recipe (not copied from a book/website etc.), that I can plagiarise for a church magazine.

Will give the poster and this forum an acknowledgement.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

At least you're honest!  I'm surprised you've not made them yourself DD. :)

I make them. but from a recipe in a book.

I was looking for something original.

Of course I'll have to try the recipe out a few times to be sure it's OK!

In 'proper' quantities not metric as it's my old recipe from Youth Club days  :D

1 lb plain flour                                                           gas 6
1 teaspn salt
2oz butter/marge
2 oz sugar
3 teaspns dried yeast or 1oz fresh
1/4 pint warm water
1 beaten egg, make up to 1/4 pint with milk
4 oz mixed fruit
2 teaspns mixed spice

glaze: 1tablespn sugar 1 tablespn milk, 1 tablespn water

Mix flour, salt and spice and rub in the fat and stir in sugar and dried fruit.
Stir in yeast and add liquids.
Knead thoroughly on floured surface.
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with tea towel and leave somewhere warm to rise.
When doubled in size divide into 12 pieces (for small ones) shape and place on greased baking tray. Leave till risen.
Make a thick flour and water paste and pipe crosses over the buns.
Bake for about 15mins.
While cooking boil together the glaze ingredients and brush over the baked buns, while they are still hot.

I must admit I've never tried it in the breadmaker, though  ::)

I have to say that this works a treat in the bread machine.

Just use the normal amount of yeast for your machine & skip the first rise and divide it up straight away.

Nice recipe Mum im going to give that a go to.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Buns - The New Batch

Fresh out of the oven. Not worth putting crosses on for where these will end up!
