Does no one in Staffordshire have barnevelders?
« on: January 21, 2011, 20:06 »
Hi can anyone help.

i am trying to get hold of a few chickens to add to my small flock but cannot find anyone who has POLs in Staffordhire that have them.

I am after
Rhode island reds
Barnvevelders
White star
Welsummers
plus a couple of others.

we are after 10 birds in total at a decent price, the ones we have found so far (countrywide range from £15 - 50 per bird!!!) are they really that rare?
1 wife, 1 daughter, 2 dogs, 1 horse, 1 Copper black maran, 1 Cherry Maran, 1 Speckled, 1 Sussex, 1 welsummer, 1 dorking, 1 silver laced wyandotte
6 new arrivals - 3 welsummers 3 barnvelder.
5 more new arrivals (pullets) - white star, fenton blue, fenton rose, plymouth rock, silver sussex

pretty normal prices for pure breeds.
Have you looked at these pages?

Staffies are softer than you think.

Price usually depends on age and quality the near to POL the more expensive.  A bird from a known good showing strain you can expect too pay significantly more for.

£15 is cheap for a POL bird (18 to 21 weeks) and £25 to £30 for a reasonable quality bird not to be unexpected.  £40 - £50 is what you might expect for a documented high quality pedigree or a garden centre priced bird the average small breeder will be nearer £25.

Why not hatch some eggs?

only hatch eggs though if you can cope with the resulting cockerels - you would be very lucky to get more hens than cockerels in any resulting cockerels in any batch of eggs. You only have to look at the swap shop section to see other people are having trouble to rehome them  :(.

excellent thank you.

I have considered hatching, but being so new to it thought it best to maybe get used to the hens first and make sure i could look after them before i tried raising chicks, probably a bit too over cautious although my main concern was the cockrel issues.

I will keep looking and maybe be a bit more patient

Thanks again for the advice.
