Question about brassicas and sowing indoors
« on: April 14, 2013, 10:36 »
I am about to sow some cabbage and kale in modules with the idea of planting out later, and have some I sowed a couple of weeks ago that are just poking through now. I have purchased one of those cloche greenhouses and put it in the sunniest part of the garden and have transferred the current kale and broccoli seedlings into there. On here I have heard that brassica's  are cool weather crops and will go leggy and weak if it is too warm. Thing is, the temperature is forecast to reach up to 18C (just 10 days ago it was 3C max and snowing!) today and the sun is out (for the first time since last weekend!) so am I likely to have the same problems with legginess as if I was growing on a windowsill? Or is it that outside the night time temperatures drop off and this makes a difference?

Thanks for any advice.

I'd put them outside in a cold frame or just outisde in a light and sheltered position.

In your cloche at 18C with the lid down they will slow-cook.
