They're growing too fast!!!!!
« on: April 03, 2011, 20:01 »
Oh help, my propagator is doing too good a job!  All my seeds are up and the squashes and cukes and courgettes are huge.. I've potted then on (in some cases twice in 10 days), but am running out of room for them inside the house and the coldframe/placcy greenhouse both full too....how shall I slow it all down, please?

You could risk planting a few of them out if you have a surplus, or donate them to co-workers or friends - otherwise just remember to sow fewer or later next year!   :D

I'm afraid there isn't an easy answer to your question.

The 3 you mention are all frost tender plants so can't go outdoors until late May / early June.

This is the hazard of starting them off too early ...  :(

What else have you got growing and is any of it not frost tender?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Peas, beans,  tomatoes, chillis and some leeks and parsnips... I thought I was too early with some things, but in my naivete I followed a planting plan from t'internet (UK based).  I did start stuff off indoors, when it said outside, but all has grown.  I think I shall be a victim of my own success.

Buy another plastic greenhouse, Wilkinsons still have them for around £10 for a 3 tier one.
I've got 3 now all lined up waiting for my tender plants to go into before they go in the main greenhouse on the lottie.

Planted the tomato seed on saturday , they will stay on the upstairs shower room window sill till it gets to look like a Burmese rainforest. :D
Might think about cuke`s and squash in a couple of weeks time.

Cukes tend to grow faster than bindweed indoors then sulk when you put them out in the cold.

It`s hard learning to wait a few weeks. :)

Think most of us have this problem this time of year.  Constantly moving plants from A to B then back again to A.

I have managed to find 2 5 foot planks and have balanced them on large tubs to make extra shelving in the greenhouse.  It might help give a little more space for you if you could do this maybe.

I've had the same problem and have bitten the bullet.  I've planted out my courgettes and sweetcorn and covered them with cloches, plastic bottles etc. to try and keep them warm.  Saw on a forecast it will get down to 2 degrees tonight so  a bit worried  but hoping for the best!!

Peas, leeks, and parsnip can go outside.

Avoid disturbing the roots on the peas, they don't like it, defnitely avoid disturbing the roots on the parsnip.

Next year I would plant things later if I were you.  Have a look at the sowing chart here

http://www.allotment-garden.org/vegetable/general/sowing-harvest-vegetable-chart.php

My tomatoes got planted 3 weeks ago and are now out in the greenhouse about 3 inches high.  Courgettes and sweetcorn and Runner and French Beans I will be sowing indoors in about a months time.

Thanks for the help, guys and gals.  I'll try not to be so keen next year :D

Will put out broads under cloches/fleece and the parsnips/leeks and peas as carefully as poss.  They're in tubes....  A risk but not too late to resow...

I think Broad Beans are OK to go outside now, I'm someone will be along shortly to correct me if I'm wrong.  I don't grow them so I'm not 100% sure.

Yep. Indeed they are. Unless you happen to live in deepest Argyll that is......where it might still be a bit too nippy..

OK. I've put the broad and peas out with some protection against birds/mice/frost/slugs etc.. parsnips and leeks out, to, leaving room to grow on the courgettes and squashes etc. into bigger pots until I can get 'em out to the greenhouse....  Thanks for all the help.  My OH thinks I'm nuts doing all this, but he did help to pay for it! :D

I shall now, rather belatedly look at the planting time line suggested!
