Point of Lay?
« on: September 09, 2009, 15:22 »
Hi,

Is POL around 19/20 weeks or is it earlier? Does it depend on breed and season?

I have a speckled sussex and possibly two lavender arucanas. They are 17 weeks this saturday. I have a broody that is around 5 weeks and i have assumed that she is now laying but could it be one of the youngsters? - But not the arucanas as the eggs aren't blue.

thanks
michelle

It does depend on the time of year, breed and individual.
I have 3 cream legbars all laying before there 19th week and 3 Fav's that are now 19 weeks and nothing yet.

Not sure what you mean by
..........I have a broody that is around 5 weeks and i have assumed that she is now laying ..........

The earliest I have know any chicken lay is 18 weeks and that is the White Leghorn. Broodys don't usually lay eggs, perhaps your youngsters could be older than 17 weeks, when I sell my growers I never know the exact age, as I have had chicks hatching nearly every week, perhaps the breeder you got yours from is the same  ::)

My earliest hybrid a Goldline started laying at 17 weeks, my oldest, an Amberlink started at 28 weeks, apart from one older Goldlines who was over 30 weeks and I thought she was sterile!!

My Exchequers are 25 weeks and not yet laying, and my araucanas are about 22 weeks and nothing yet!

hi,

sorry, when i said Broody 5 weeks i meant her chicks were 5 weeks old and my previous broody started laying again after her chicks were about 5 weeks old.

I think it's her. The others are 17 weeks old on Saturday so i don't think they are laying yet. They sort of don't look quite there yet physically as they haven't fully developed combs etc. and they just look at little too small. I think another 3-4 weeks especially with it being autumn.

Thanks

Michelle

If the broody's chicks are 5 weeks old I would say it is her that s laying then.
