can i treat for coccidiosis
« on: September 09, 2009, 16:49 »
with Coxoid and worm the chickens with Flubenvet at the same time? The fact is I don't know what is wrong with them so I thought I'd try for both.

How old are your birds, what are their symptoms and have you had a look at the poo pages on the poultry information section? Sorry so many questions but need to know why you think they may need either treatment. joyxx
Staffies are softer than you think.

Signs to look for are sleepyness and a fluffed up appearance and loss of appetite! PLEASE REMEMBER that blood in the poo's is not always a symptom! i personally wouldnt worm and use coxoid at the same time but if i suspected cocci then i would use the coxoid without delay as by the time the birds show visable symptoms they have had the cocci for a few weeks.

the oldest bird is 2 i think, i had her from an battery farm at 1 and a half years old i was led to believe. the other birds are 1 and a half. all fluffed up, a bit lethargic, a little off their food, heads in, tails down, mucky bums. lots of flies around my run which i'm combating. i moved them to new ground and later put woodchip down. they're well fed and have fresh greens but i fear i may give them too much cooked potato as i've a lot of them this year.

Older birds can get coccidiosis and the pulled in head and fluffed up appearance are symptoms! I would put them on coxoid straight away the quicker you treat them the more likely they will recover (syringe the diluted solution down the chooks throats if they arent drinking or eating) i would still advise taking them to the vets asap too! just incase its something else.

Those symptoms can also indicate a soft egg if they only last for a few hours before layign but better safe than sorry.

very true Rob it could be a soft egg  but if you treat with coxoid asap, it wont hurt but if you wait to find out if its something else they could be dead! the treatment for a soft egg is just time but if its cocci time will kill!

the coxoid will be here in 2 days time yet the older bird has been under the weather for a few days already. i've brought them all home for some tlc and milk syringed down the gob; i read somewhere that helps. not many soft eggs at all.

is it not possible to get it sooner? would think larger pet shops would stock it i get mine at a pet feed shop local to me! if you cant get it sooner than 2 days, could you get one to the vet? a vet could prescribe baycox if they think it could be cocci too and if not they could give any other meds they may need!
