OH and I are hopefully moving house and have found a little bungalow nearer town which backs onto Lancaster Canal. I believe it faces east to west but OH disagrees. Apart from having another viewing and taking a compass with me is there an easier way to find out as Google maps doesn't cover this estate.

If it isn't on Google Maps yet, then apart from having another look, the agent may have the information for you. If you have a vague idea of the layout, ask which way the bedroom, livingroom and kitchen windows face as they are the ones you spend most time in.
By the way, some newer smartphones have a "compass" app that is better than nothing.

Can you not work it out, if you just keep enlarging the Lancaster canal map as much as you can?
-
Is it an oversimplification to suggest that if it backs onto the canal, you ought to be able to deduce its orientation by looking at the canal on Google Maps (or Earth) ?
-
Satellite dishes almost always face south.
-
Could you ask the current owners ? If not, you'll have to go and sit outside all night and see where the sun rises and goes. Go on a dry day though :D good luck Mrs Bouquet

If you can get there at 12:00noon, GG, the sun will be due South.
I'm not sure how this works with BST, but an hour either way should make little difference!

Its a lot easier to look at the satellite dish (at any time of day or night, rain or shine!!)

I tried Google maps but maybe I should look at the canal part and see. The house has been empty for well over a year so I can't ask the owners and it doesn't have a satellite dish. Next time we pass the road entrance we'll drive up and see as long as it's a sunny day of course! ;)

Does it say on the plan on rightmove, it often does have the points of the compass or in the details might sa6 south facing etc. I know you will have read them but may have missed it 😊

you could look at the planning map online
-
Are there no houses in the area with a sat dish/
-
I've just looked at the map view on rightmove then moved the map so so I could see where we live further south of the place. We face west so it must also face about as near west as I thought. Cheers.

Visit around 7 pm, the sun will be west, or 1 pm , the sun will be south.
Look on Google Maps or Google Earth.
