I tried growing them last summer, but without much success (pretty bad summer all round).  I had to hand pollinate them , but when they grew they were about the size of tennis balls - there wasn't many, so I didn't both picking off any. ???

When I ate one (they were not firm when pressed), they were lovely and sweet

I grew melons for the first time last year and they were really succesfull. so much in fact that I am giving them a full half of the greenhouse (12ft). I grew them in the greenhouse border last year, but this year I want to try growing them upright on a wire frame.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

i wish i had a greenhouse in which to grow melons!

i have one of Percy Thrower's books and in it there's a picture of a melon hanging in a net and the caption says "melons in nets".  it makes me chuckle every time i see it.
don't ask me why, i'm a girl and shouldn't find that kind of thing amusing.

can you grow melons in a conservatory or warm attic room?

There are some varieties that do OK outdoors in a sheltered spot, under cloches or in a cold frame.  You probably don't want them in the conservatory as they need high humidity and you don't want your furniture or carpets to rot.
