Storing Carrots
« on: September 14, 2011, 16:30 »
Hi,

I have gown carrots in some large tubs and I was thinking about storing them for the winter.  I was thinking that instead of pulling them all out of the pots and storing them in sand, I could simply move the tubs into the garage.  I say simply, they might be too heavy to move and this post will be academic!

I guess I would have to remove the foliage and cover the tops of the carrots with fresh compost or sand.

Has anybody any experience of this?  Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Chris

yes some types store better than others, but if you take out any that look diseases and put the rest in a frost free dark place buried in sand they will keep well while you eat them (watch out for mice though over the winter!)
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

I agree with above, that by harvesting them you at least know if you're bringing in any hidden diseases or pests that would continue to destroy the crop.

I too plan to bring mine in and store them in individual layers in a big wooden box of sand that I'll fill as I go along. Kept in a cool dark place, they should do fine.
