Which tastes best?
« on: October 21, 2011, 11:01 »
Hi all,

I've only ever grown tomatos in a greenhouse and just wondered if anyone has grown both, outside and in a greenhouse at the same time?

If so did you notice any difference in quality of flavour and texture or not?
Was one better than the other?

Yes we do both here. Hanging basket types such as Gartenperle,100s & 1000s outdoors - although we grew Gartenperle indoors too last year -  and anything else such as plum tomatoes (Roma,Inca) or Golden Nugget indoors.

No discernable difference in flavour, they just grow more vigorously indoors. This might be due to our extremely open position and abundance of sunlight in the summer.

Hmmmm, right.

I was going to grow some outdoor ones next year but not sure it's worth it now!

See what people further south say too as that will undoubtedly have an effect on the outcome.

I only ever used to do outdoor ones as I had no greenhouse. They grow just fine outdoors but are more susceptible to blight of course.   I have toms outside now and they're fine. Gardeners Delight that is.  I've grown lots of varieties outside over the years and one of the most successful has been Costoluto Fiorentino, and one year I got a bumper crop of Mortgage Lifter.  Tigerella is fine outside as is the little Ildi. There are loads of them  :D

I was just thinking of growing a few more toms mainly for sauces to be honest, so wondered if it would be worth it flavour wise.

I just had it in my mind that the outdoor ones would taste better for some reason, not sure why

I do vaguely remember seeing it. ::) I just meant that perhaps in the back of your mind, real sunshine on their backs would make a difference.  :D

I grow bush and trailing toms outside as they are hard to find room for inside, plus they fruit earlier and usually miss the blight attacks, but keep the cordon toms for the greenhouse.

Roma are not great raw but an excellent sauce tom that come into their own when cooked - you want a variety with thick flesh and few seeds.  I've got a freezer drawer full of sauce from 3 greenhouse cordons and whatever other toms were going spare to see me through the winter  :)

If you feed your greenhouse toms with tomato food and don't overwater, you should get great tasting toms. Sometimes greenhouse ones can be a bit insipid if they have had too much water - just like the supermarket ones in fact  ;)
