Title: Garlic
Post by: Chuckles on May 06, 2009, 16:26
I've recently upgraded my chucks drinker to a 30 litre leg drinker and I'm having problems putting cloves of garlic in like I used to do with the other one as the cloves are getting stuck in the bottom nozzle (thought they'd float!!!).  Managed to buy some garlic powder from the horsey shop - am I ok to put this directly in the water or would I be better mixing it with their feed - they are on layers mash???

I always put it in the feed.  Pellets or mash makes no difference.

In the feed it goes then!  Any idea how much - it smells like pretty strong stuff!  Don't want to overload them with garlic!

I add about a scoop full (should be a scoop in the tub) to, at a guess, a couple of kilos of feed.

Dont over do it though otherwise you can taste it in the eggs. (Which many or may not be unpleasant) The girls dont seem to mind how much you add though.

Garlic eh?

I give it to my dogs to help against flees and ticks. I wonder if the chickens get anything from that side of it.

I've got a LOT to learn.

Not to contradict Aunty but I put mine in the drinker, I couldn't get it to stick to the dry food and all that was left was a dusty mess in the bottom of the feeder.

By far the easiest seems to be porridge - I stick everything in a dog bowl, poultry spice, crushed egg shells, grit, cod liver oil and garlic add warm water and stand well back. Its like feeding time at the zoo.

Thanks all... I'll give it a go in their feed - I'll try not to go too overboard with it though...I love garlic so I wouldn't mind garlicy eggs.....but not so sure the rest of the tribe would agree!!!!!  :) :) :)

I also read somewhere that garlic makes chicken blood unattractive to red-mite :)

I had garlicky eggs once as the ducks had got into the veg patch and eaten every scrap of garlic leaves above the ground!

It wasn't that bad but I like garlic. Glad I had them scrambled though. Don't think I would have liked it in a cake!+
