netting
« on: March 11, 2009, 20:49 »
hi all,

The busy time is almost upon us. c'mon.

My question this week is..... Im sowing tagetes, marigold and callendulums. to put on the plots for the vegetables as an encouragement to hoverfly and various other predator creating insects to hopefully protect my veg. if i am to do this, do i need to net the veg still?

I would certainly net brassicas and other susceptible plants as companion planting has not been proved to be effective at preventing pests.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hoverflies are good against aphids, so your marigolds will help with anything you don't net (if you have enough enviromesh to do the whole plot, I'm jealous!).  Also, they attract pollinators, so you could try them under runner beans and such.
