Well here it is..

Made from a length of scaffold plank for the mantle, 2 bits of timber joist off cuts and a pallet panel, sanded off and I will be waxing them tomorrow.
Total cost incl fixings which where nearly all recyled from other jobs  £0  :D

Better get the decorating done now  :(

Thanks  It's been bugging us for months what to do with it, so a freebie option was great not everyones cup of tea but there you go. I considered buying a green oak one at £185 then my common sense took over, to buy the greenoak  to build one myself would have been £60 ish plus the petrol and that still sounded a lot

Common Rob, you know you can do it

I've just shown Julie and she's very impressed and even more keen than before  :)

Got the tape measure out and the constructional hearth extends about 600mm from the breast with a superimposed hearth about 500mm (which would probably be removed).

Building regs state 300mm superimposed hearth from front of stove but is there a further margin for the constructional hearth ??
ie does it need to extend further than the superimposed hearth ??

Also, we would want to cook/heat food on the top, so would that need a rear flue do you think ?

And have you built those sides or are they the original flue bricks ??

Just thinking aloud you understand

No I don't think the hearth does Rob as long as you have 300mm your clear

The sides have been rebuilt don't look too close at the brick work
The back I rendered with a strong mortar mix as the brick work was a mix of old and new different size bricks.

Yes I think your going to have to rear vent the flue, and I think that you would need far more "head" room than I have.

If you want to cook/heat food on it could you not position it further out and extend the hearth so it was easier to get at ?

I wish Shaun was about, he's a mind of info on these and helped me through doing mine.  :D

Nice job Richy, but I do worry that the plank edging is a bit close to the heat source. I think you'll find the wood will get warm once the burner is on regularly, the wax will definitely melt and possibly ignite because the warmth will steadily spread across the plank width. I'd keep a small fire extinguisher close as well as a fire alarm. Ideally you could face a few inches all around the opening face with fire-rated tiles and then place the wood beside that.
A very serious consideration is to check with a wood stove shop about current regulations as well as insurance company regulations. You might be surprised at what they will and won't cover if the worst should happen.  Some families around me were devastated to find they weren't covered at all because the wood stoves weren't registered with the insurance company, which cancels payouts at accident times.

The uprights I just no nails'd them, i'm not sure how it will react with the heat so if that does'nt work I'll have a look a mirror plates.

Trill thanks for the advice, I might have 2nd thoughts about the wax, local build regs says 150mm for combustible materials so I know it's a wee bit more than that so hopefully it will be ok, but I do keep a close eye on it and it's never left burning we shut the vents down if there's anything left at bed time.
