Overwintering strawberries
« on: January 13, 2012, 11:50 »
I have a few strawberry plants I grew from seed last year, and they cropped late summer time - really lovely ones too.  I have left them in situ outside, but not sure if I should lift them and bring them into the cold greenhouse - really don't want to lose them.  Not sure how hardy they are.  And I'd like to see if they produce fruit earlier this year.  But would a greenhouse be too warm for them?

Leave them outside. They'll ripen earlier in a greenhouse, but they'll also develop more disease problems in an area too warm and humid for them. They much prefer cool weather (one reason why they're such an early crop) and good air circulation.

The last 2 years I've grown some in grow bags which I put into the green house in March to get an earlier crop. They are then moved outside at the end of May.
Stawberries are very hardy and actually need the cold wearth to give a good crop the following year.

I agree but don't forget to remove the dead leaves and stalks.

Strawberry plants are as tough as old boots and will survive just fine.

Brilliant, thanks folks!   I'll re-pot them so I can make them mobile, and keep some outside and some in the greenhouse come spring.  :)

Hi i would take Trilliums advice not to put them in the greenhouse. Mine are outside come hail rain or snow, never let me down yet.You can get early fruiting strawberries if you want an early crop this would extend your growing season. :)
