Need more space !
« on: July 15, 2011, 20:48 »
I may have miscalculated (again).

I'd like to put another 50 leeks in here somewhere, but where ? I've already binned the idea of kale and PSB this year.  :(

Is there room for them either by early harvesting some spuds, or else underneath the beans on the left - depending on the type of supports you've got?  Otherwise, what about getting some lettuce up?  You could always grown them in boxes at home?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Could you put the leeks in among the fruit bushes, or at least around the edges?
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

Unfortunately that is home - no plot for me Yorkie  :(

The spuds went in very late (2/3 weeks ago) - I was hoping the courgettes would grow into the space left when I harvested the lettuce,  the beds are 8x4.

If I clear the spring onions / lettuce in the bottom right that would give me a 2x4 block I might get 21 in there or is it worth squashing the spacing do you think?

Possibly get a few in between the currants / quince but not around the raspberry thicket and the backberries are at the foot of a wall in about 2inches of soil  :( The blueberries have more space but the soil ph is low and I keep it soggy in there.

A variation on the Aunty suggestion of the paths - I dont know what your paths are like but if they are not permanent paths then you could plant long lines of leeks round your beds which would still leave you room to walk. Assuming you cannot plant them just inside your beds. Dibbing holes around the outside and pop them in, even two to a hole and settle of baby leeks?

Could you put the leeks underneath your beans, both French and Runner?

We've got celeriac under our French Beans. We weren't sure if it would work, but so far the plants seem to be doing okay, in fact they seem remarkably happy and a very rich green, possibly because their roots go into a trench of kitchen waste, are being kept warm by the beans and gets a decent amount of water too.

I can't see that leeks will mind extra water, and nitrogen from the beans.

Just take a few inches off one or two of the path edges? We got a row down doing just that, and they're very happy.

I'm hoping to get rid of all the paths on 'Plot Growster' next year. There's about 100 s.f. to gain, which is currently used for standing and staring on, and it has to be mown and edged as well!

100 s.f = 10% more growing area, as long as everything is planted in straight parallel lines.

And no paths.

Paths?

Ah - that explains the white bits in the plan!  :tongue2:
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
