Now, you might feel this is a stupid question but.............
I have yet to find a marker pen that works!
What do all you luvverly people use to write on their plant labels that doesn't cost the earth, is water resistant and fine enough to still be legible after 3 months outside?
I normally stick the seed packet alongside my sowings but these seem to disintergrate by the time I plant out :(
Was it a courgette/marrow/melon or gherkin.......... :?:  :?:  :?:  :?:
I suppose that it adds a bit of mystique to growing from seed :D
Early peas and carrotts in tomorra, early spuds in last week
Have fun out there

I write mine on strips of foil pie trays with a biro, don't matter when it fades then, or http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=2630

I use an ordinary pencil. Lasts all year but you can scrub it off (well mostly anyway) and reuse the labels. Good if you are a cheapskate!

Every 10 years I invest in a special outdoor marker pen with a fine tip. Costs about 2 pounds but it never wears off and the pen lasts ages if you keep it capped when not in use. And hide it from the non gardeners in the house who will use it to mark boxes and such.  For the actual marking surface, I was given a new, unused slatted aluminum window blind, which I cut up into useable pieces about 3-4" long. Will never rust or rot.

Good tip with the slatted window blind. I,ve used the same idea but with a plastic blind, you get plenty of labels out of one.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

I've also used the plastic blinds as well for tags but the sun soon breaks down the plastic and the tag is gone, something to consider if you're permanently marking flower varieties. Year to year veg are okay tho.

I use an ordinary pencil, but only when the stuff is in the greenhouse, once planted outside, I have a map of the veg patch which shows where everything is.

Have also started cutting plant labels out of plastic milk bottles as someone on here suggested!  Good, only the edges can be a bit sharp.

I got a pack of lovely metal plant labels, with each pack came a marker pen that can only be removed with Acetone, works great outdoors :)
