I have put my chicken pellets in last weekend, now I am worrried that I have put it in the wrong place, where I want to grow carrots, parsnips, leeks and onions, do I have to abandon growing those things this year? is there any thing I can do to correct my mistake? what will it do? why shouldn't you manure root veg??

Thanks

Root veg will be fine with the pellets.  Only fresh stuff they don't like

Great thank you.... I thought it would prob be alright as you had told us to chuck it about. So what is the reason to not use fresh manure? :?

Thanks for reassuring me.

Insteady of Munty's nuclear approach to things, Loubylou, one could simply say that chicken poo is just too full of ammonia (what makes it smell so strong) which will burn plants, young and old. Time is needed for it to break down, like at least 6 months. But it's great stuff for firing up your compost heap into high.

The rest of us are talking about chicken pellets, not chicken manure.

Can't imagine how I got into another boat, WG
Does this mean I don't get another smack on the hands with a cabbage leaf?

Thanks loads, it is what I wanted to know, I have used pellets on the patch, but am curious about the uses of fresh stuff, I am aware that generally manure has to be well rotted on the heap, but thought that manure of any kind might be bad!

Thankyou all for you help, I am always keen to learn every point of view.

I use the pellets all over my little patch and have great crops.  I don't normally grow roots so can't comment on the splitting root problem if land is too fertilized.  I do use the pellets as a thin 'mulch' around my soft fruits bushes, in the spring after pruning,  gives them a good boost for the start of the year. Just like we all need!! hehehe
