Hi

ive got early carrots, spring cabbage, spring onions and broad beans, and two types of garlic in the plot, all of these are autumn sowing varieties to grow over winter,

now, ive earthed the carrots up, but if they are autumn sowing, surely all these are hardy enough over winter without any other protection?

sure they are zak - but it may be difficult digging them up if the ground freezes (not that that's likely at the moment though) - that's why I've got mine covered with a thick layer of straw topped with fleece.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

thanks peoples,

pretty much as i thought, should be ok but dont want to risk too much frost.

So, i think the spring onions can have improvised cloches (we get our milk in 2 pink plastics should make good small cloches),

that big plastic bag from the rug can make a poly tunnel for the beans,

not sure what i can improvise for the cabbage, maybe have to buy a bit of fleece for those.

Incidentally - with the plastic bottles should i pierce air holes in e'm and leave the tops on, or take the tops off? :?
