To go in after potatoes...
« on: July 31, 2016, 13:57 »
Hello everyone,

First post on here, so apologies if I leave out loads of stuff...also, I'm sure this question has been asked before, but here we go anyway...

I took the potatoes out of the ground today, which was great, and now I have an empty potato bed!

I'd like to put something in there; I'm not overly bothered about what it is although if possible I'd like to harvest this year or January/February next year, and I'm also acutely aware that there is a major slug problem where I am, so salad leaves are probably not ideal.

I have nothing started in any propagators so I'm growing from seed.

I've also got a second potato patch that will be emptied in two weeks, and again I'd like to put something in there.

Any ideas most welcome.  The same thing could be sown twice, ie., in each patch - I'm just struggling to find anything that could go in.

I'd heard that some cabbage varieties could be planted...would be interested to know if that would work!

Alternatively, I could cover it/leave it fallow and plant something else in there next year...what do people reckon?

Thanks all!

I am going to sow some green manure after my potatoes which should help the soil for next year's bean crop.

I've followed potatoes with kale, beetroot, Florence fennel and dwarf beans successfully in the past. I'm moving plots in the autumn so nothing going in this year.

I always have a plan for follow up crops with plants ready for planting.
I followed tatties in one bed with winter cabbages and kale, and yesterday lifted some tatties and put in leeks.

Me too.  I've tried following with leeks but they never get really good, so working on soil fertility makes sense ...

I've just sown some perpetual spinach where I have dug up some potatoes. I intend to put green manure on other potato beds which should hopefully replenish some soil nutrition by next Spring.
