Shallot seedlings
« on: July 10, 2014, 12:43 »
Been & Queued have strips of shallot seedlings, about 6 inches high, which I could put in where some potatoes have been cleared. Question is, is it a bit late in the season now for shallot seedlings? If  they don't make much this year could they be left to overwinter for a flying start next year? My normal shallots grown from sets are already drying up.

I think that like onions, shallots are sensitive to day length and will probably stop growing pretty soon, before starting again next year. You may as well save your time and money and just plant a known variety next March/April. If you want to plant something, what about overwintering onions like Sensu, I think you sow them around Aug/Sept.
