This is my first year for a long time with a greenhouse and I have grown a variety of items, many of which are just to see what comes. My tomatoes were planted in muck buckets as were the peppers and chillies. As the end of the season approaches, I have growing on one of my tomato plants a very odd shaped one. This is in the bucket that was next to the chillies and peppers. Could it have been caused by cross pollenation. When it finally ripens I shall check it out. Any ideas???

Tomatoes are from the same family as peppers and chillies but completely different species, so I'm fairly sure they cannot cross pollinate (the chances of it happening are remote anyway because tomatoes are such efficient self-pollinators.)

In any event the answer to your question is "no" I believe, because it would be the seeds rather than the fruits which would be changed by cross pollination and would not subsequently grow true to type (they wouldn't in any case if the parent plant was an F1 variety.)

It looks similar to Polish Paste tomatoes which I have grown this year. There are a couple of Eastern European varieties that have a 'tail' like that.

It does look like a cross, but JayG is right, it would be the subsequent seeds that would grow the 'cross' not this original tomato!  Do you know what variety they are supposed to be?

Cabbie - If it was grown from collected seed it may have been a cross pollination that caused it but still dubious and doubt it as offspring from a pepper/chilli family cross with a tom.  Possibly a previous cross with another tom somewhere..
