garlic cloves inches deep - not showing
« on: April 28, 2013, 23:47 »
I was encouraged by a plot neighbour to try planting some garlic cloves  inches deep, so I tried this against some cloves I had already potted.

The potted ones are away and putting on size but the 3 inch deep ones haven't shown yet.

Are they too deep to come through or do you think they will come through soon? Should I trowel down, find them and re-plant or are they done for? I usually plant them with the growing tip about half inch from the surface if I plant direct.

3" deep won't kill them but it is a bit deep really. I plant mine only about an inch below surface. It's not too late to furtle for them and set them a bit higher if you feel anxious about it.

Your neighbour is correct and is the traditional way. Planting deep means that they will not run out of moisture later in the season.

Obviously the deeper you plant them the longer they'll take to appear  ;) I'd just leave them to get on with it  :D

I agree don't worry about it. A couple of years I have found that my garlic has pulled itself deeper and disappeared until a whole year later when it has reappeared and produced some really nice big cloves. I've asked on many forums and never got an answer to the reason for this. My own theory is that maybe the ground wasn't firm enough so it pulled itself down until it got a good grip. Further theories welcomed with interest.
