Wow they grow quick!
« on: April 13, 2013, 14:14 »
I planted some dwarf French beans on Friday afternoon for my early sowing. Last night when I went to bed around 11 I could see about of green below the surface but that was all. I went into the spare room at lunch time today and they are all at least 2 inches tall

I am desperate for my others to start growing and my chatting sweetcorn to sprout now...

Do you mean Friday as in yesterday?  if so that is too quick, but if you meant last friday, it's possible.  With the warmth in the house.

Thing is, will you be able to keep them warm enough until you can get them outside?

I sow mine late April, and they stay in the greenhouse until middle/late May when they go outside.

I sowed them last Friday (so not yesterday) - but to go from nothing to 2 inches in 12 hours.... I have plenty of space in the house for them and my little plastic greenhouse so that's not a problem - I was just surprised at how quickly they shot up.

I think that growth is a bit too fast. It can lead to leggy plants that are weak and prone to problems.

Starting seed off in the warm is fine, but once they've germinated, they need to be kept in something near to their final growing conditions.

Inside a house is not that.

I'm only just thinking of sowing mine in an unheated greenhouse.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Well the packet said to sow mid-April onwards on a warm windowsill - so I have done this, the sane as with all the other seedlings (which have not shot up in this way - imam still waiting for them to even show!  It isn't overly warm in there as there is no heating but it is very bright as it is south facing snd I think the sun we have had has done them well. They are big thick seedlings at the moment so hopefully will stay like this / I intend to do another sowing in 3-4 weeks time so they are staggered anyway. They seem to have slowed down this afternoon and focused their energy on opening their leaves :)

I find all beans grow like there's no tomorrow indoors.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Any beans I've pre sprouted and planted out I've lost - I direct plant them in the ground from early may and they do just fine.

I wouldn't have room for all these seed trays in my house or greenhouse anyway!! :D

Ok - that's interesting. I haven't grown dwarf French beans before but the Dobies seed packet doesn't even give planting straight out as an option - it says to plant in individual pots on warm windowsill from mid April and plant out once frosts have gone...

Maybe I should do my second sowing directly outside then?
