germinating seeds question
« on: April 10, 2013, 18:12 »
Why do some seedlings come up with the seed case firmly attached to the tips of the leaves and fail to get rid of it?

As DD said, just happens.

Tends to happen a lot with circubit seedlings.

They should ping off eventually, or you can gently try rustle it off, but be sure not to damage the stem or crown of the plant or its curtains.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

You can try misting them with water, it tends to happen when the seed casing dries out before it is shed.

its curtains.

What are it's curtains?

Means its closing time i.e. if you break the stem trying to remove the seed shell it will die !!

Azubah - Why bother about the seed shell anyway.... just leave nature to do its thing...

Sorry for not explaining.

But as PD explained.

It just means the plant will die.

Old saying for the end of the line.

That's hilarious - I misread it in exactly the same way!!  I was just thinking, I've never heard of a plant having 'curtains'.

P.S.  Are the boards always going to be in this 'new blue' format, or will it go back to green - I'm having a hard time reading everything, even with my young eyes!! x

Getting back to the subject.

When this happens to seeds it is often that they are not planted deep enough or the compost is too loose and the seed coat is not held in the soil.

Kimberley, I assume you are using a phone or tablet to browse the forums? Since the forum upgrade, these devices will automatically load the mobile version of the software. If you wish to see the "normal" green theme, you can click the full site button at the bottom of any page.
