Title: Best coleslaw cabbage?
Post by: Deborah1 on May 05, 2021, 12:02
I would be interested to know opinions on the best cabbage to grow for summer and winter coleslaw. They don’t need to be monsters - although I’m often not successful so maybe if a monster sized one was puny that’d be ok too ;) Thanks in advance! I have seed of Kalibos, Primo and Langedjiker but would like recommendations of other/better.

For years, I've started with Hispi for early sowings and followed on with Minicole, though seed for both is getting harder to find each year  :(

I'm with mum for Minicole, plus we also use plenty of Cabbice which are slightly bigger. I've also grown Langedijker which are very good, but much larger.

Kalibos is one of my favourites and I grow it every year. Not too large and always eaten as a salad veg in our house.

I also grew Sarmarsh last year and am again this year. It is a Japanese style flat cabbage and does get fairly large. Really sweet and juicy for eating raw. I made lots of shredded salads with herbs from the garden and a simple dressing, plus coleslaw. No trouble here eating it all  :)

I have had great success with Red Drumhead if you don't mind the colour. Nice for coleslaw with plenty of hearty flesh and good steamed / boiled too; we don't eat much cabbage so its good for us.

Red rodeo or Primo do a good job for me.
