Second crop of figs?
« on: November 13, 2023, 17:00 »
Was just tidying up around the fig tree and noticed a few of the small green ones had turned purple and fallen off the tree. When I picked one up it was quite soft, so I’ve put them on the kitchen windowsill and will see if they come to anything.

It’s such a shame we don’t have a long enough season to ripen them all as my tree is absolutely loaded with green figs. I did try to preserve them last year, but it was a lot of work and the results were awful. Tasteless chewy green lumps in syrup.

Yes, it's a real shame, good luck ripening those few...

I picked 2 second crop figs a week or so ago and they did fully ripen indoors.  They were small and the skins were thicker than the summer ones, but they were OK.

Today I picked a dozen  :D  They are again small, but are definitely changing colour.  I have more smaller green ones on the tree, but not sure if they get any further.

If the dozen make it to ripeness, I was thinking they would be fine for a pud of some sort.  Fingers crossed anyway.  I’ve never had a second crop even get close to being ready before.

Would you try to ripen them with the old banana in a bag trick?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Good to hear that they might be edible. I might try thinning out the second crop next year to just leave a couple of dozen of the biggest and see if this encourages the fig tree to ripen them. Mines on a south facing wall so is pretty protected.

Oh, I have a fig tree in my conservatory, I bought it this year, supposed to be 3 years old

I was hoping for figs next year

I dont expect anything for a while from my new fig tree, its very small

This doesnt boide well for my fig trees
It's all about the journey, not the destination

When I say 2nd crop, I mean 2nd crop this year, not ever. Had lovely big juicy figs in summer, but it then grows a second crop which seldom has a chance to ripen in the U.K. Yours should be fine.

Ah, sorry, I missed that bit about a 2nd crop
I'm hoiping I will get my first crop next year
Its all tucked up in my conservatory now, just enough water to keep it damp
Its not going to freeze in there

Hello arent the ones on the fig tree next years ,I always though the fig produced the following years in the late summer early autumn then they stayed on and grew till the following autumn ,I may be wrong about this    jezza

It is the tiny pea sized fruit you save for the following year if you see them.  Sometimes they are so small they are hardly there, but they are the ones that produce fruit the following year.

Anything bigger than that and the advice is to pick them off and compost them.  They tend to rot over winter and come to nothing.

I’ve never seen young figs, so I have no idea what they are like

I’ll keep an eye on the fig trees at the garden centre and see if I can see these  pea sized fruits

They grow right in the point where the leaves meet the branches and look just like little green peas.

I’ve picked another 3 second crop fruit from my tree, but it is losing its leaves now so I think that is it.  Still 15 small figs as a bonus second crop is fine by me.

The summer crop was big and the best I have ever had.  These are just jam on top  :)

What could have been :(  Will definitely thin these heavily next year in the hope of encouraging a few more of the second crop to ripen. Got about 12 this year and although not as juicy as the first crop, were a nice little and of season bonus that went well in porridge.
