Title: Daily Harvest Post
Post by: Beetroot queen on August 06, 2009, 13:00
It would be lovely if we could show off our harvests, but rather than have 20 million posts just use one big one, its lovely to show off what we have collected

I'll show you mine, if you show me yours  :tongue2: sounds rather rude doesnt it

Nice size & shape - are they still a bit green to have a taste? Im still looking for something that tastes right to grow next year.

Not tasted them yet, and won't be doing until they're well dry! (About next July the way this weather's going). Still using up the winter onions.

Agree about the shape - I hate those with flat bottoms where you waste half the onion chopping the root off!

As usual I fell for the write up at the local nursery, which said it had high yields and excellent flavour. At least the first one's right!

I am so glad somebody elses garlic is only spring onion sized.  Mine were planted in October so should have 'suffered' the necessary cold spell.  Will speak to Colin at the Garlic  Festival next weekend as to what went wrong.

No pics from me - my rechargable batteries are finally no longer rechargeable. But Im very proud of myself so bear with my story (or not!)

Second year of plot - first year did well on peas, beans and swede and not much else of note. Been ill with Crohns this year so missed a month of vital growing time, and have been playing catch up since then.

Our next door neighbours Bill and Brenda - both in their eighties - have had it rough recently. Bill has had a hip replacement and been diagnosed with cancer, Brenda has also had a new hip and probs with her back

Anyway - to cut a boringly long story short.  Brenda used to Dig For Victory back in the war, and has always taken a keen interest in my plot stories.  Today was the first time Ive been able to take them round a 'veg box'. They had garlic, onions, spuds, courgettes, cabbage, lettuce, herbs and carrots with plenty more to come.  Their faces were fantastic.  Best ever day Ive had with my produce, and I thought I was a tight wad!

Garlic looks a bit green, Mick. Has it cloved yet?

All looks good though.

Yeah Dave, they've all cloved! There are some 'normal sized cloves' under that pile somewhere! lol! I pulled both the onions and the Garlic up earlier than I would have liked as with all this rain things had started to rot and I got a wee bit scared! lmao!! I thought best have some small bits than rotted bits  ???

I can't take the credit for growing these.. but I will take the credit for eating them.

Yellow plums and they're rather nice. Its a shame I can't cook otherwise there'd be something other than stewed plums on the menu.

WOW, what lovely pics of your crops!

Today some more cherry toms before I dug the rest of the tom plants up from blight  :( and a marrow which I am going to use with the green, good toms to make Hugh F-W seasonal chutney (a friend has given me some bramley apples to go in it too!).

Going to take some sweetcorn cobs off tonight to go on the side with homemade pizza and I recommend if anyone is growing yellow courgettes - harvest a few when they are small, slice them thinly lengthways and drape them on pizza raw when cooking - delicious!  Might take up one of the few spud plants up too for a bit of potato salad - greedy guzzlers we are! :tongue2:
Title: Dinner tonight
Post by: Lady Lottie on August 25, 2009, 21:46
I know this is blatant showing off but it was just brilliant providing most of dinner tonight from the plot and watching my family really enjoy a hearty meal  :D

Desiree roasties
Fresh peas shelled by my 3 yr old (with a little help from Grandma), really sweet and juicy
Baby Leeks
and Parnsips that were to die for, even though I do say so myself.

Took my dad to see the plot and we were chuntering about how big the parsnip tops were and surmising about what might be lurking beneath.  "Have a furtle," says my dad.  So I did and was astounded at the size of the first one I pulled "Hope I haven't just pulled up what could have been my prize winning parsnip!" I replied, incredulous at the size of the beast on the end of the leaves :D

They seem to be a really decent size already.  I'm still learning.........I thought I wouldn't be harvesting them until November...?  And something about leaving them in the ground when it's frosty to sweeten them keeps ringing a bell....?  I think mine might be about 3 feet long by November    (hopefully...)

lifted yesterday weighed in at 360lbs, lifted using a sheet one on each corner.
Given to the children at the local school to play with and cut a face in.  Get ready for next year now. I Will probably have some spare seed if interested let me know. Sorry but first come first served. Wont send it until end of February.

Griff, would love some seed from that mamoth, a friend of our's started a pumpkin war with two plants she brought and we won with a measly 5kilo pumpkin. but first year and the kids where very impressed any way. It would be great to grow something that big :)

I would love some of these seeds please! I grew turks turbans and pumpkins on the raised bit (for drainage) at the end of our patch, and it was lovely to hear people's comments on them (we have a footpath through our lottie). (comments were mainly - "aww, what happened to your pumpkins?", with me answering "they're turks turban squashes, they're supposed to look like that....": so it would be great to nurture a giant one for people to marvel at! what did you feed yours on? love the fact you've given it to the school - that's great!

Repeat piccie, I know, but just be warned pumpkins easily cross with any adjacent cucurbit., you may not get what you expected.

It was a plant I gave to a neighbour.

He says he ate the fruit, but I keep forgetting to ask him in which form!

The plant was a pumpkin/marrow cross.

Taking some veggies to a friend in a flat in London. She pays a fortune for organic veg. She'll love mine, all covered in muck still smelling of Autumn on the plot.

A lovely veg selection.  You're a better friend than me, I would have taken it home and eaten it  :tongue2:.

We had a lovely sunday roast yesterday with spuds that we found on our new lottie, some swiss chard that a neighbouring plot holder offered me, as well as parsnip and some jerusalem atrichokes from my own garden.  Yummy!

Hello.

This is my first "daily harvest" post.

What excitement today!  First potatoes!

We only took on the site in August (previously grazing and not been dug before), and as a punt I put in a row of potatoes (Maris Peer) August Bank Holiday weekend, hoping we might get some new pots for Christmas.
Dug up some today and they look fabulous!

It might not look like much of a harvest but small beginnings and all that...!

Looking forward to Christmas dinner now. :tongue2:

Here's daughter no. 1 with her "haul" - potatoes, beetroot (her favourite), baby carrots and turnips.

I harvested some radishes today - and they are pretty darn big!

The varieties are:

And 4 beetroot, though not sure what variety.

Does anyone how I should best store them for 3-6 weeks?

Thanks

the radishes might be woody if they're last years

I'd eat the beets now

Post by: DD. on January 17, 2010, 07:29
Agree with CQ - if the beets aren't woody, you could pickle 'em".

Managed to get down yesterday to my plots, I've been chiseling out of the frozen wastes just enough to keep us ticking over, this time it was on with my Christmas present, (fleece lined wellies), to face the quagmire.

Well worth it- Big bag of sprouts, January King Cabbage, Savoy cabbage, 2 humungous parsnips, bag of carrots, 20 leeks (leek & spud soup coming up), some very early PSB and one grotty half hearted swede. (We've eaten the two big ones the whole row produced).

Picked sprouts, a few PSB, scorzenera, parsnips, leeks and savoy.  The swiss chard was very frosted so I dug half of it up. It had fantastic looking roots.....can you eat them?
My daily harvest is beginning to use stuff from the freezer as well now.

My veg growing is clearly on a slightly smaller scale than most of you lot, but I'm still very smiley about it!   ;)

(http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab224/Starlinglp/Allotment%202010/DSCF2034.jpg) not bad considering the plant had been consigned to the compost twice because I was sure it was dead.
A few broad beans and peas too
(http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab224/Starlinglp/Allotment%202010/DSCF2032.jpg)
2 courgettes and a marrow and various berries which were all eaten by my little helper before we could take a picture.
This growing lark is such good fun

Dug up a short row of first earlies, not sure what variety but they're very bright pink.  Also, had my first ever globe artichoke.  I hadn't realised quite how spiky and painful they are.  After it tried to kill me a few times I just chopped the damn thing in half so I could get the middle bit out.  Tasted nice though.

In other news picked peas, sweet peas and a couple of beetroot from the guy on the plot next door.    Also some mint to have with my fresh peas and new potatoes for tea.  Yum!

First courgette of the year (they were a bit slow to start).  A nice bit portion of peas, a few of the last strawberries, a globe artichoke.  I took up the last of the first earlies, but the yield wasn't that good after they were hit by frost.  Thinned the tubs of carrots, and have heaps of baby carrots to get through.  Some of the onions had gone over, so I dug those up and left them to dry out (maybe a bit early, not too sure).  Will have a nice stir fry with my artichoke tomorrow. :)

More first earlies cleared, replaced with a late potted squash and leeks.

A couple of Onions, to be replaced with a potted Kohl Rabi when it has formed a good rootball and been hardened off.  Onions will be replaced by more brassicas as I plant onions and brassicas in the same bed.

Corgettes and squashes coming up all over the place - not sick of them yet.

Yesterday I picked tons of raspberries and made a great raspberry cheesecake. I've no idea what kind they are but I have to say they are the best raspberries I've tasted for many years, they came with the house.  :) I also picked a few more courgettes and made some posh zucchini fries which were lovely and I think I finished off the sugar snap peas which never make it indoors! I've got more plants coming along but not near flowering yet wish I'd got my timing right and will try to do better next year, so that I have a constant supply as we all love them.
Today if it ever stops raining I'm going to harvest some beetroot which I have never used fresh before so I can't wait, I  have a few ideas for using them. Mind you it's not looking as if the weather will break as it's pouring down at the moment and has been all morning, the dogs are following me around asking for a walk but I'm hoping to put that off a bit until its drier. I might get some more potatoes in today as well.
I'm loving this growing your own malarkey, walking out and picking a lettuce, spring onions etc as required is brilliant and I'm sure it's all saving me a fortune in buying in veg. A small punnet of raspberries alone costs a fair bit and we've got loads. :)

Not a bad haul though!
First artichoke of the season.  Didn't last long, daughters shared it for starter.

This bird was one of two white ones ( are they cobs ?) which are bred locally and usually killed at six weeks.

We decided to add them to our crew and let them lay. However, they were such gluttons and barely moved unless forced to get outside that weight became a problem. The first was dispatched ( disappointing when cooked ) and the next started to lay occasionally.

She too succumbed to greed and overweight so met her demise swiftly at the hands of an expert. The difference was that we hung her as recommended on this site and she was delicious.

I got the job of gutting and cleaning ! and cooking of course,

More courgettes, had an unsuspecting new guy on the plot next door and managed to fob a few off on him.  Some nice french beans - Cobra, will try that variety again.  My very first tomato, hurrah!  Growing them outside so taking forever to ripen.  Spuds have been very disappointing this year for some reason, tried some heritage varities but next year I will stick with allotment favourites.  Loads of shallots, have pickled the small round ones and kept the banana ones for cooking.  I've also pickled a jar of beetroot.

Made some courgette bread.  Bit fiddly, but a very nice recipe if you're stuck for things to do with courgettes.

more new spuds (had them for tea... amaaaaazing!), a handful of peas, the last of the sugarsnaps, some mangetout that went over so I de-shelled them and cooked as peas... and harvested my Kale early... under duress.  >:(

The kales next to it have been attacked by a hoarde of mealy aphids... monstrous colony of them.... so decided to cut my Nero di Toscana kale a month early rather than let the blighters take it over.
Its a cut and come again, so might get some new growth once I've sorted the mealy aphids out.
Horrid things.

Been gathering ladybirds from all over the plot today and setting them down on it.... lets hope they can eat many times their own body weight in aphids!

My first daily harvest report: courgettes, runner beans, red duke of y potatoes, red onions and shallots, peas and a few broad beans + 6 different sorts of lettuce leaves - used with roast chicken for the 3 of us yesterday and fried up as a fritata to go with local sausages today + a bag of the same veg given to a single friend in the amounts she could use for one meal. Strawberries, as well, mashed with some sugar and used to top cheescake.  Feeling very proud of myself when I carry the produce into the kitchen knowing it was grown organically and picked the previous hour.  No air miles with our food at the moment!!

Thanks Thrift! I'm preparing them to pickle!!!  :D

I have my blighted tomato plant whose fruit is so far healthy but still green, a number of carrots, some leeks and some cauliflowers (which I'm desperatley struggling to keep ontop of a caterpillar attack!! But I'm winning so far ;) - Next year they will be heavily meshed!) to harvest yet.

I'm soooo excited. My leeks are fab! I am dying to pull one up to cook with but keep leaving it to get a little bigger :tongue2:

I have four cauli heads growing but like I said its a job keeping ontop of the caterpillar problem. I go hunting every day! ;)

I have turfed a few of my OH's plants out of the flower bed to grow my veg and what he doesn't know is that I'm now so hooked that I'm planning on removing the other 3/4s of the non veg plants to make way for next years masses!!!!! :tongue2:

Ha ha, just peeling my eye watering shallots last night convinced me that I will be grwing more and more veg year on year until most of my garden is taken up!

Cooked a spicy pot-roast brisket meal yesterday for a couple of friends, and tried to include as many home grown veg as possible as several of them are coming to an end.

Roast potatoes (the last of the Lady Chrystl which I left in the ground as an experiment), roast herby Winter Squash, runner beans, sweetcorn, buttered carrots with parsley, cheesey-baked courgettes. "Afters" was raspberries and Cornish ice-cream.

So satisfying when all your home-grown stuff comes together on a plate to be shared and enjoyed with others!  :)  (Top-rated item was the sweetcorn, by a mile, as usual!)

Mange Toute and Peas (Kevlin Wonder) second wave of sowings;
French Climbing Beans - much smoother taste and mouth feel than runners;
First planting of runners nearly finished and the second sowing just in flower. The old vines will come home with me one day to be introduced to my lawnmower and then thrown in the compost bin;
Beetroot, carrots, corgettes, turnips, swedes, swiss chard, kale, sweetcorn and dwarf french beans.

My plot is one of few that are still blazing away while the rotovatar crew have done their damage and gone home for the year!

Ha ha! No offence intended - I'm sure i would be digging a lot more if I were back in the Midlands with the clay until I had broken a couple of spades getting enough manure and compost in the mix. The soil I have is sandy so I would need a shovel rather than a spade. One thing I miss about the Midlands is the fertility of clay.

Brought this nuttybut squash home to ripen.

You'll have to take my word that it weighs in at 11 1/2lb. Had to use the bathroom scales and the display won't stay on long enough for a piccie!

Looks incredibly shiny! Did you polish it DD?

(Hope it tastes better than my 4lb 2oz "courgette" which finished up in the compost bin; a bit like eating expanded polystyrene but much more disappointing!)  :(
