Title: Super-deep Tomato Planting

Yet another twist on tomato growing from a market gardener in the USA - I thought about trying this one out but you need more room than I've got to do it.

Very interesting!

I've used the layering technique several times, especially when the toms in their starter pots have become too leggy. They do eventually 'turn upwards', even if they're not looking very happy, and I suppose the receptors in the underground stems do get more 'grub' as a consequence!

I'd go for your idea John, presumably you can grow them like their cousins (spuds), and earth them up as you go along, but it seems quite a lot of work for an extra truss or two...

Interesting! I planted out my toms yesterday, otherwise I might have sacrificed a plant or two to give this a try.

I've some very leggy toms so I'll see how deep I can get them without a post-hole drill!

Then you may well get a bill from the Australian Tomato Grower's society...
