Sow beetroot
« on: March 31, 2013, 11:52 »
I sowed some beetroot in the greenhouse on the 13th march. Still nothing has come up. The greenhouse has been warm every day when the sun has been on it. Should they have come up by now ?

I've got some in my polytunnel growing in modules also. They're only just starting to come up now. They will come up eventually, give it time! ;)

Beetroot does not transplant well and tend's to bolt if planted in cold soil. I don't sow mine until may.

I sow mine in modules and plant it out in whole module clumps.

Does very well  :D

I've always sowed my beetroot in modules and transplanted out - no problems. Red Ace in one inch cube modules of peat free compost.

Beetroot only bolts in hot weather, not cold. Ditto for chard.

Wrong. If you plant in cold weather it is liable to bolt.....Fact

I've always sown my beetroot in modules and planted out - never had any problems at all. My last lot germinated quite quickly in the house, in a cool room. Bought seeds of a white variety yesterday - looking forward to trying those, they're supposed to be even sweeter than the red varieties  :)

I  use a variety such as Bolthardy for early sowing and transplanting
If you gradually harden them off and make sure they are well watered after transplanting they should not bolt.
But I always look at weather forcast and only plant if there are no extremes of hot or cold weather

After over 30 years of gardening I read my Beetroot label and it mentioned a Endogenous Inhibitor. Never new about it before, but here's a link............
http://aob.oxfordjournals.org/content/35/1/31.short
I always do a few in toilet rolls and I soaked the seeds first this year. Also in my search it said the deeper you sow your seed, the bigger the root, but it didn't mention what depths.
