winter spring onions
« on: November 05, 2012, 13:20 »
I have some winter spring onions growing in a container outside. Shall I take them in the cold greenhouse or leave them ? Also, can a sew any new indoors for another batch ?

Thanks.

If they were winter hardy salad onions (It'll say on the packet) then they can stay outside.

I doubt you'd get any more to germinate in these temperatures.

Well I germinate them in the house on top of my PC and it worked for my toms last year.

For early salad onions I plant small Japanese onion sets close together in trays of compost in the greenhouse. The current lot already have shoots 4 inches and, although they don't do much in the very cold weather they soon burst into life come springtime. Last time I was in Wilkos they had nets of small onion sets at a good price.

Don't think I will bother as last year hey were planted in sept and hardly grew at all in 10 months. May as well have just eaten the sets. Same for my winter spring onions I sowed late summer. They are looking very small and some have gone thin and wispy as most others do  :(

I planted some winter spring onions (the type with big bulbs) and they did well. I planted them in a large container and they are still outside (from the advice here). I just had a look and there are not as many and some are going thin and whispy at the ends and about to wither.

Again, something else I can't grow after doing all the right things  :(

One year we forgot to pull out and use some spring onions so I just left the over winter on my rooftop garden. In the spring they regrew and had fairly big ping pong ball size bulbs... great taste too..
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

I sowed 'White Lisbon winter hardy' in October and since they germinated they have been in my polytunnel

If you want to sow more indoors now, where and when will you move them out of the house?

The clue is in the name... Winter... so once they have started I'd put them in the GH to harden off for a few days then into the plot... but maybe it'll be frozen... so put them into long flower tubs and leave them in the garden.

Last year planted far too many spring onions in the summer so just left them in the ground . They were pretty big by April but still tasty!
Taken over neglected veg garden at new home. Enemy number 1 Ground Elder. Then there is the furry terror - bunnies - to contend with!
Made a start have beds established but moved in too late for serious planting. We shall see what 2015 brings.

So mine in the large spud bag should stay outside during winter and not come in the greenhouse ?

After sowing last summer end they are still very thin and haven't put on anything yet. Is this too early ?
