Not yet - just think; you may be eating runners for about four months...

Do you want that?

Oh YES!!!!!!  :D

Aw Grans...

Runners have a certain season, and after that we get fed up - literally!

Same with brussels! Even leeks - well, it's summer soon, so they don't figure do they...

My Dad grew loads of runners on his allotments.  Loved them ever since.  I could happily eat a plate of runner beans and nothing else!  Same with leeks!  Wouldn't want to try that with just brussels though!

I freeze them too.  Brian isn't too keen on runners frozen, but I chop them up and they go into stews, curries etc.

Then you're pretty fortunate Grans - and I wouldn't ever disagree with that...0)

Runner beans are the food of the gods.  Any disagreement will result in your removal from this forum. >:(

Well maybe not, in the spirit of freedom of speech.

Funny thing is, all my life I hated runner beans, until I started growing them. They just don't taste anything like the runner beans you buy in the shops. From the garden I love them, but from the shops I hate them.

Mrs Growster regularly kills for the first runner beans, which makes me a star in some sort of movie where a bloke grows runner beans for his ever-loving wife, and falls foul of something or other...

From there on, I've nothing more to gibber...

Oh yes please, and longer. The more the merrier and what we can't get round to eating gets made into chunky piccallili, runner bean chutney and courgette and bean chutney. :D :D

I agree with Ice about the timing of sowing. They romp away in the warm weather.

I always think that the first bubbling/steaming of the year has an evocative smell.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Last year I made pickled runner beans from the River Cottage Preserves book.  They are absolutely delicious, even my sceptical husband is now a total convert.
