Title: Runner / French Bean Comparison
Post by: wbmkk on July 11, 2014, 17:21
I sowed Lady Di runner beans and Cobra climbing French beans on the same day, towards the end of April in 3" pots, inside a greenhouse.

Towards the end of May, I planted them all out, each next to their own row of 8' canes.

The runners are all about 5 feet tall, some a bit more and all the happily climbing up my poles.

The French beans hardly look as if they have moved since I planted them out. One has just started to climb and is about 12" high.

What's going on please ?

They are growing side by side on my new allotment

French beans seem to be a bit fussier in my experience, and like sulking  ::)
They don't like cold - they don't like wind, they don't like too much rain, they don't like dry weather...............

d'you get the picture? What has your weather been like since planting *chuckles*

Possibly lack of nutrients or lack of water - can you think of any reason why there might be a significant difference between the conditions in the Cobras' row and the runners'?

When in doubt, it never hurts to give them a liquid feed - I'm sure the Cobras will wake up soon.

I normally find that the cobras will sulk for a while if as said conditions are not perfect, but then they just seem to  take off, we have been picking them for a week. The runners on the same frame two different types are now in flower, I hope it's a better year for beans for me this year as they were not so good last year think the problem was water they need loads of it.
