Ants eggs
« on: September 07, 2009, 16:50 »
Bob Flowerdew, on Gardener's Question Time, mentioned a method of collecting ant's eggs which could then be fed to hens.  I didn't quite catch what he said.  Did anybody hear it?  it sounds a good use for all the ants I find in my garden.

hens won't normally eat ants as they are very very acidic, there are only a few animals that do eat them, but watch a hen when she does find a big ants nest..  she will let them creep all over her picking off lice its great

You can listen to it on BBC i-player.
Not sure if I'm allowed to post the link, but just google Gardeners Question Time BBC, and you'll find it.

If you can find the link, feel free to post it. Just beware if it's very long, as it messes up the width of the thread and we all go falling off the right hand edge.

As long as it's less than a window width you're fine. :)

Mine go nuts over black ants especially the eggs and flyers. A black ants nest + chooks = one deep hole. :)

I think the red ants are too strong with their formic acid stings , i sometime see starlings taking a red ant bath, haven`t seen the chooks do it yet.Seems to be mostly black ants in the garden this year, very few reds.

My gang love eating red ants' nests and larvae. They get one every week as a treat, occupies them for hours, they go crazy for them :D
