Garlic that is not garlic !
« on: September 08, 2014, 16:21 »

I planted some garlic I brought home from Greece,  it grew like garlic, even down to scapes but the cloves are huge, slightly opalescent flesh inside very tough brown skin.  They only grew three or four huge cloves to each plant and with absolutely no garlic smell or taste at all.

I'm stumped.   Cheers,   Tony. ???
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Very probably.

Elephant garlic is not garlic at all and is a relative of the leek. I grew it once and did not bother repeating the experience.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I love elephant garlic and add it to soups, stews, roasts etc. My plot neighbours are always asking if I have spare cloves, so it is very popular. It has a different taste from garlic and has many uses. It will also store for over a year with no problems.

Oh man, what shall we do with you? Fancy not liking elephant garlic!  :nowink: I've grown it for years and converted the local plot holders.

I guess it's simply a case of knowing what you want from it.  If you want proper garlic, it's no use despite the name and you'll be disappointed; if you know what it's like and choose it for those reasons, you'll be happy!  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
