Tomatoes...outside
« on: April 28, 2007, 22:36 »
I have 12 plants given to me by my dad... they are well advanced in 3 inch pots... I am being tempted to put them outside tomorrow in their bed on the plot.
They have been hardened off outside for a week already.
has anyone done the same... what are chances of a Frost now?  I can cover wiht fleece if needs be.

My beans been out 3 weeks already and well advanced with this warm weather here on the South Coast...lets hope jack frost doesn't show until November now!

If your content to put our your beans, why not the tomatoes too?  Frost nearby this morning but I'm more than 600 miles north of you.

I put mine out 2 to 3 weeks ago and I'm next door to you in West sussex when they were about 6 inches tall.  But then again I am inexperienced at this game.

Mine went out last week, but were around 12 inches tall and they are inside the fleece barrier the carrots are in so a little protected.  They are fine so far.  Last year they went out quite late and I got about 3 toms from them so this year I have gone to the other extreme and put them out really early!

I've had tomatoes sitting outside for a couple of weeks now, they are still in their pots, but I forgot to bring them in at night, but they are absolutely fine, I got some more today and I'm thinking of just putting them out; I think we're pretty safe down here now ( but don't quote me on that if we do get another frost   )

Purplebat, think the site you are looking for could be gardenaction.co.uk (sorry don't know how to do a link  )A good site to use though is Met check, just click on Johns links then allotment weather, Met check. If you enter your postcode they have a gardening page that gives you soil temperature as well as the weather.

I have not put mine out yet. I think they will be ok from frost but they will slow up out in the cold and you possably loose the first and maybe the second truss of fruit. I find its better to wait. The plants I will be putting out are only 15mm tall.
