Grow bags - too garish...
« on: March 20, 2020, 06:19 »
Can anyone tell me why grow bags have to be in such bright colours?

Is it so that they can attract other bags, or do they have pictures of tomatoes on them to remind people what they're growing in them...

(We're not using them this year, preferring pots and trays, but in the past, we made a green debris netting 'sock' for each bag, which was very fetching...)

Perhaps it's in case your crops fail you will still have some colour in the garden?  Either that or the multi coloured plastic is cheap.

With my logical head on - it's so you can easily spot your favourite brand at the garden centre. As if anyone has a favourite brand nowadays!
Even old favourites now differ from year to year and all seem to be rubbish unless you can afford what the nurseries buy to raise their plants :(

As with garish fishing lures, they're not there to catch fish just fishermen (and wimen).

The grobags only need to attract gardeners!

Cheers,  Tony.

I wonder if you could take some old cream emulsion paint and a brush/roller and slap on a quick thin coat before opening the bag to disguise the base colour?

I think the brightly-painted gro-bags are psychological cunning hyping traps to entices you to think "Wow! It's gonna do what it says on the tin." Yeah right. Better to produce a better compost within than spend money on enhanced pics.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

If I can find my gro-bag sock, I'll gladly post a photo of it, just to keep everyone happy!

;0)

They even look ugly in the greenhouse, but as it gets so dirty in there after a summer of organised chaos, it doesn't really matter too much...

Emulsion won't stick to the plastic, you would need a special        primer/undercoat first which is about £22 a small tin, before you could then paint it.  Would make the price of the gro-bag rather expensive.  ;)
