Cuttings - how do you do yours?
« on: June 04, 2014, 21:29 »
I have just taken loads of cuttings from a fuchsia and a hebe style plant and used some rooting hormone. I have used sharp sand only as that's what I have used for hardwood cuttings - blackcurrant and gooseberries with an over 90% strike rate.

What way do you do it and does it alter between softwood and hardwood?

I use a 50/50 mp and sand mix for mine DMG and don't use hormone powder.  I got 100% stike rate from 4 redcurrants over the winter.

I have't done any summer ones yet, but will do, as I have a rose scented geranium I want to keep over winter.  Previously I have done lavender and various other shrubs in this mix and it has worked well  :)

I have a rose scented geranium I want to keep over winter.

They seem to work better if you let them wilt a bit first, and keep the pot barely moist.

I often put my cuttings straight into MPC and don't get many fail  :) Rosemary, hydrangeas, gooseberries; softish stems of fuchsias root well in a jar of water  ;)
I find evergreen shrub and rose cuttings seem to do better in slits in the soil, filled with sharp sand and inserted quite deeply, but the success rate with these isn't as good  :(

I've recently bought some vermiculite and perlite which I am looking to start using for cuttings but I have a 100% strike rate with using MPC so far (I have 5 sprigs of bay on the windowsill) & mint in water seems to always take.

Cut it off, stick it in MPC mixed with a bit of grit or vermiculite, try not to overwater and.......hope for the best! Usually works. :)
