firm bed for brassicas?
« on: January 18, 2012, 07:38 »
hi all, i know that sprouts benefit from a really firm bed before planting, but would you say that this also applies to other brassicas? i cant really find anything that recommends a firm bed for them even for sprouts. so i,m after some advice from the more experienced grower.any advice would be helpful. :)

There's this for a kick off:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/techniques/growfruitandveg_growingbrassicas1.shtml

"All brassica crops grow best in partial shade, in firm, fertile, free-draining soil."

I always run over the soil where I'm planting any brassica with a very heavy garden roller, (not when it's wet though).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Also this:

"Cabbages need a sunny site and firm soil. "

Google "brassicas firm soil" and just see how many hits you get!
