Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew where one would buy pea and broad bean seed by the kilo ?
I can't seem to find anyone on the web that does so ...

If you could, postage would offset a lot of the advantages.

I get mine lose from a local independent nursery, you won't find them in the chain stores, so you'll have to look around.

Too bad you're not in Canada. All our garden centres regularly offer a wide selection of by-the-pound seeds, including potatoes.

1 kg is £4.35 plus £3.75 P & P = £8.10. I pay £3.99

However, if you go up to 10 kg that's £32.50 + £6.25 = £38.75 - £3.88 a kilo, a fraction under what I pay - but a LOTTA peas!

Moles seeds and Nickys Nusery both do.

Although what on earth you'd do with that sort of quantity I have no idea. A quick look shows 80-85 broadys to 100grams - you looking at 850 plants per kilo - Even I couldn't eat that many

Can you get a few of you together and share...or get your lotty association (if you have one) involved so they may be cheaper?

As peapod suggests, you may find your local lotty association already sells it loose in whatever weights you want (subject to stock availability) - mine does

Like DD I have a local independant nursery which offers loose pea and bean seed, along with 60+ varieties of seed potato. Not only is it cheaper to buy this way, it avoids excess packaging ( compostable paper bags ) but you can buy exact ammount you need

Definately worth supporting these local independant nurseries -
could we compile a list? or would that be deemed to be for commercial gain?

I've freely mentioned my nursery, it's not for commercial gain on my part and has saved a lot of members local to it a lot of cash & extra choice. (They had nearly 90 varieties of seed spuds).

You can freely mention B & * having a half price sale, so no problem in supporting your local independent.

I put "Nurseries" and "Exeter" into a search in BT.

There's plenty of places you can dump your kids off!

Also check proper hardware stores ...  the sort that have allsorts of stuff in the centre of smaller towns.  They do still exist and often have a gardening corner with peas and beans by weight ....  they have other tempting things that you didnt know you needed but somehow end up at the till

Our local pet shop sells loose pea and bean seeds, and lots of varieties. You can buy one of each if you wish so how good's that   

I just got a shipping order for peas from Moles but we usually get them from our local wholesaler but he gets them from Moles anyway.
