Toad Stools in my bag of compost
« on: May 24, 2011, 19:30 »
Evening

I've opened up a bag of levingtons today to find quite a few toad stools init and I'm not sure if this is normal or not as I've never come across this before.  I only bought the compost last week and don't want to open the other two bags just in case there is something wrong with it.

Thanks

I would say take it back and get your money back, or have a different brand!
I used some Levingtons like that and the plants in it have not done very well at all! The other compost I was using (Wickes) gave much better results :)

I only ever use organic composts and they all produce mushrooms of some sort or another - Levingtons included - I put this down to there being no fungicide in the compost :)

Interesting point about the fungicide, doesn't explain why when I opened a bag two mice jumped out.

They have probably incorporated some spent mushroom compost. Be careful with this as it contains lime.

There was no 'pest'icide present either  ;)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They are only ever wee mushrooms though and quickly die off. :)  I will be sure to look out for mice in future though

I don't think bagged compost has been treated with funcide. It doesn't say so on the bags
when I think they would have to say so (or at least warn people to wash hands etc)
If they normally contained fungicides seedlings would't suffer from damping off would they?

I guess you're right there.  Incidently my bro picked up some compost for me (Shamrock) and it wasn't organic but he picked it up because it was on offer - when I opened the bag to me it smelled quite strong and not sure of what and when I read the details on the back it said to wear gloves - although there was no mention of what might have been added - I think you mentioned in a thread the other day MOS about the quality and labelling of composts - I agree that something needs to be done about this :)
