Apart from a fork and a watering can, what would you say are your essential pieces of equipment for a new starter?

I agree: fork, trowel, hoe.  I have a spade but don't use it very often (although it's good for winter digging).

For next season, some canes to grow stuff up.  And string tied onto two old pieces of wood / branches - to act as a straight line to sow seeds along!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

As above, all I use on most of the plot are fork, trowel and hoe.

However on the edges where I'm clearing blackthorn bushes and roots I needed a mattock and tree saw. Hopefully you have a better condition plot than mine...

A hoe and a rake.. alongside a good fork, that will keep you busy until spring.

Apart from the obvious that have been mentioned......a pot to pee in, a chair to sit on when reading the paper. (pot contents go in compost bin) :)

Edit : Cool box for beer

Pete C choooice  :D

i would add tiller and weed eater. plastic buckets - yes, especially if they are after some building materials like plasterboard stopping mix or so(very solid with metal handle 20kg capacity and easy to wash). 100-200l plastic barrel to prepare liquid fertilizers. Wheel barrow.

the plastic trug things in Asdas the smaller ones are £2 and the bigger ones £3 - both sizes great for the plot.
