I wouldn't attempt to grow seeds in straight compost, no matter how well rotted as it's likely to be too 'strong'. Mix it with plenty of sharp sand to dilute it and you'll also improve its drainage properties.

I agree, raw composted material has an extremely high nutrient level (called  'hot' in the trade )and will 'fry' the root hair on seedlings.  You need to mix it 3:1 with loam, sand or used compost at least to get the nutrient level down, Seedlings dont need nutrients!!

the plant did not develope any root structure what so ever,

I know I had a lot of trouble with B&Q peat-free being a sciarid magnet - ended up full of the tiny wee maggots and lost lots of roots... learnt to water from below and have a yellow sticky trap around at all times...
