Squashed For Space
« on: April 24, 2011, 22:44 »
I have a space on my allotment around 10 by 8 feet and wondered how many butternut squash it could happily accomodate, local opinion reckons two plants. Advice very welcome.

I might try to squeeze in 4 plants, staggering them slightly. Bit I really hate is being ruthless and only allowing a few flowers to set  ::) You could try & train them by pegging some down, trailing them over pallets and "stopping" them when they get too long

You could risk one at each corner, and make them all grow round the edge of the bed in the same clockwise / anti-clockwise direction by putting sticks in the ground to guide the growth.  If you did that you'd probably have room for a courgette or similar in the middle.

Just make sure you feed and water well.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

first of all which variety of butternut squash are you growing? as Harrier & Hunter are both compact bushy varietes, and you could easily grow 6 of these in your bed.........I've grown 6 in a 10ft x 4 ft raised bed with good results.
But the other big trailing sorts do need more space..........

Thanks for your help and advice, shall try those tips. The variety of butternut squash was not mentioned on the packet, hoping it may be a more 'dwarf' type.
