My 3 year old hen has been a bit under the weather the past few days and this evening I found this in the hen house. I've seen a lash before but this is much larger, leathery skin and smelt awful when I cut it open. What is it and will Sweep feel better after passing this this? I know I would!!!!
-
You forgot to add the picture Kym.
-
I think it would be advisable to give her a course of antibiotics. Bad smell = infection.
-
I can't post the pic. I've spent an hour trying to resize it! Where's a teenager when you need one!!
-
I have had several lashes from my hens in the past and they have varied in size - some even the same size and shape of a large egg, but none have smelt bad when I have cut them open.

this is the picture...

and another pic...

what on earth is it?
-
Iv only ever had one lash it was about an inch long and hollow didn't smell felt rubbery tho
-
This felt rubbery as well ... has anyone any idea what it is??
-
It's certainly some abnormal tissue sloughed away from her egg mechanism somewhere.
How is she feeling now ?
-
all the lashes that my girls have laid have resembled wafer thin ham with a fluid inside but this has never been smelly, the smell bit is certainly worrying and for this reasomn I would get her on a course of antibiotics as soon as possible.
-
I sugested that in reply #2, Joy, and I hope Kym has got some for her.
-
She seems alot better today - she was the first one to reach som e cooked rice leftover rice I put down at lunchtime.
-
That's good news :)
-
It doesn't look dissimilar to the lash in this thread.

what is a lash ?
-
It's tissue which is expelled from the egg tract of the hen. Often the lining of the shell gland.
