The grass/weed/whatever that was covering the allotment has now been trimmed and I have started to dig the ground. I end up with a lot of the grass roots and just throw them in a pile

What do I do with them? Are they any good in the compost bin? (there are going to be a lot of them!) Shall I just take them to the recycling center? Burn them? What did you do with yours?

Thanks

They are likely to be the roots of couch grass. In my case I would be waving them 'goodbye' as they left the plot in a skip that the council provide. In a pile they will not rot down as the outside ones will continue to grow.

You can 'drown' them to make a liquid feed, perhaps someone else can explain this, but as far as I'm concerned the faster they leave the plot the better! If we were allowed bonfires, I would certainly consider burning them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

if they are couch roots  i would dry them and burn them. our council dosent do skips so thats our only alterative.
if on the other hand they are just  normal grass i think i read some where that turning them over and stacking them till they rot down  will produce  a nice loam .

If our council let us have bonfires - we wouldn't need a skip!

So that is no good for the compost bin then? Probably would take to long to desintegrate I suppose...

I don't know if it is couch grass. I going to look for a picture.

There you go : Before    :

And after  :D :

(the pile you see is made from the branches of the blackberry bush that I cut back. Not sure what to do with it either     )

Doesn't look like couch grass with all those flower stalks, so you may be OK stacking it.

The blackberry will burn well when dried out!

Yes, I thought of it, but no bonfire here too  :?  I think I will just take them to the skip then...

Thanks!
