Hens Pecking Anything Red Question
« on: October 12, 2010, 19:32 »
After reading all the posts on hens pecking anything red on their house mates including blooming areas and the application of purple spray to prevent pecking I have a question: -

Why do hens not constantly peck each other's combs and wattles which are as red as can be?

Just curious.

Is it because it's a wound?

when my hens were younger they would often get each other in a wattle-hold if they could steal a tasty morsel of food by doing it.
They will peck anything unusual to see if it is food , a new bleeding wound is unusual AND food.
They are also daft about dripping water.
