Mite spray ???
« on: October 13, 2009, 19:33 »
My friend, who keeps pigeons gave me a small bottle of Johnsons anti-mite spray to use on the inside on my new coop to deter mites etc

Says on the tin:
*kills mites & Lice
* for cage birds e.g. budgerigars, canaries, pigeons etc
*contains natural biodegradale pyrethrum

Says it can be sprayed directly onto the birds or over the coop itself. I have read all the other products you guys mentioned for mites etc (mine don't have any - this is just to prevent), but as this stuff was free and I could get more off him, just wondered if you thought it would be safe for the chooks too?

This is the stuff:

on the back of the can should be a phone number for johnsons technical services. they would be the best people to call. at a guess its probably ok but check first.

If it's safe for cage birds, it's safe for chickens  :)

Pyrethrum is a safe product to use.

Thanks Rob :)

Thought it might, but I am a bit over paranoid about the girls as I am so new to this. Wouldn't like to think I had done anything to make em ill.

Always best to ask. Bear in mind there are very few experts around. I'm only going by what I've been told.
But I believe it to be perfectly safe to use on chooks. :)

The johnsons team will not comment on its use for chickens as it is not licensed for poultry, however I have used a similar product on my chickens and they are fine!

Hi,
Yes it is perfectly safe for chickens, even sprayed directly on them (not eyes)
It kills red mites instantly, I used to use it when I had only a few chickens (as I used to keep aviary birds and had some left over) but when you have loads it's too expensive  :)

Hi, I use pyrethrum regularly in the hen house with no problems at all  :) also use it on the veg as its organic, but , it is a non discrimate contact killer and kills the goodies as well as the baduns
